Exercise 43 – Evidence of Action

Introduction:

We have been asked to produce an image in which it can be seen that something has happened. We should also  show something that is either broken or empty. In my case I found something that was definitely broken. We are also asked to write down some examples (at least five) of advertising concepts that are frequently depicted for products that cannot be shown, (example insurance companies).

Process:

While driving around Dubai, I came across a large residential block that had recently caught fire and the whole building was closed down. In fact the damage was so severe all residents were evacuated permanently. So far the insurance companies have refused to pay, so it looks as through all the residents of the 50 floors or so will have to find a new home and well as try to claim damages of property and belongings.

Some examples of advertising I thought of that cannot be depicted by photos are:

  1. A small yellow duckling on a pillow – to depict how soft the pillows are for sleeping.
  2. Someone holding there first pay cheque – this would be to show how gaining a degree can help gain employment.
  3. A large 27inch MAC monitor, standing tall with other PC type screens all broken and laying around – to show how the MAC has become a dominate force for advertising and photography users.
  4. A tough guy running in the rain and all muddy, while other weaklings are falling behind and falling on the floor – an ad to show how joining the Army can make you stronger than others.
  5. A drinks can with a lightning bolt going through it – to show a powerful sports drink.

Conclusion:

I was going to also show the picture with a magazine cover title. But as I thought I would maybe show that later on it may not be applicable to this exercise. I also found myself thinking hard about the five examples of photos used for advertising. It made me think about all the hundreds of theses types of ads we see daily, but just how many of them we take for granted.
